Why Owners Stay Longer Than They Expect in Villars

This week I’ve found myself chatting, almost in passing, with a handful of owners who have been here a long time, 15, even 25 years in some cases. What struck me was how similar their stories were. It nearly always began with how easy Villars is to get to, and how much life there is here year round. More than a few now spoke far more about summer than winter.

For many, buying here originally centred around the skiing. Villars has long been known as a place that works beautifully for families, with skiing that feels accessible and confidence building for children. Over time, some had thought about selling. Life moves on, priorities change. Yet almost without exception, they said the same thing. They come back, spend a little time here, and quietly fall back in love with the place.

One conversation in particular stayed with me. It drifted away from the usual talk of seasons and views and into something more reflective. His property, he said, was for sale, but only at a price he would genuinely be happy with. It made me pause and think about how different second home ownership can feel when it comes to selling.

Often, there is no real urgency. Homes are not always brought to market to be sold quickly, but rather offered patiently, waiting for the right buyer at the right moment. The enjoyment of owning still outweighs the need to sell, so unless the timing feels right, many owners are content to wait.

In places like Villars, that mindset feels especially common. These decisions are rarely just financial. They are shaped by years of memories, family time, light filled mornings, and familiar views. Perhaps that is why so many owners stay longer than they once expected, because letting go only really makes sense when it feels right.
